The police department in Strasburg, Virginia, recently took to Facebook to announce the new scheme, which will see them accepting 10 canned food items as payment until December 31.

The canned food will be donated to local not-for-profit food pantry Compassion Cupboard of Strasburg, dedicated to supplying food to those in need.

Facebook users are already lavishing praise on the scheme.

“I've always considered most tickets just another way to collect taxes. This way a ticket turns into a blessing for someone,” user Gregory A. Palmer wrote.

Strasburg Police are also accepting canned goods donations from individuals who don’t have parking tickets.
